Shongum Lake Property Owners Association (SLPOA) is a private homeowners association in Randolph, New Jersey. SLPOA is made up of more than 800 properties with rights to use Shongum Lake. SLPOA membership includes beach access, boating privileges, free swim lessons, a clubhouse, and a full calendar of social events.

The American Heritage Dictionary describes a neighborhood as “district or area with distinctive characteristics,” but what does that really mean? Actually, you know one when you see one. Shongum Lake is such a place. Neighborhoods are warm and welcoming and neighbors care about each other and work together to make their home a great place for everyone. Shongum Lake is such a neighborhood. A drive through our streets will reveal people walking and talking with one another, people enjoying each other’s company on a deck or patio, and kids playing together. Throughout the year, the lake itself is a hub of activity. Whether it is ice skating in the winter, swimming in the summer, or taking in the breathtaking foliage in the fall, there is always something being shared among neighbors at Shongum Lake.

Here are some of the questions we get asked frequently.

What does it mean to have lake rights?

It means because of where your home is located, you have either a license or deed to use Shongum Lake and its facilities.

What if I don't want the lake rights?

The lake rights are irrevocable and you would still need to pay the sustaining yearly membership.

How much are the annual membership dues.
When are they due?

There are 3 levels of membership. The annual dues are:

Full membership $702
Household of 3 or more – full privileges

Limited membership $533
Household of 2 or less – full privileges

Sustaining membership $410
Keep lake rights current – no privileges

Annual dues are payable on or before April 30 of each year.

What if only 2 members of my family use the lake? Can we only pay the Limited Membership?

No. The level of membership you pay is based on the number of family members that reside in your home and not whether or not you all use the lake facilities.

It's only my husband and I, and our infant child. Do we still have to pay the full membership?

Yes. The membership level you pay is based on the number of family members that reside in your home.

I'm buying a house in Shongum Lake that has lake rights. How much do I have to pay my first year?

There is a one time initiation fee of $702 plus annual membership dues.

Premises occupied on or before July 31 of the then current fiscal year: payment of 100% of the then current year’s dues.

Premises occupied between August 1 and including the conclusion of the Labor Day weekend of the then current fiscal year: payment of 50% of the then current year’s dues.

Premises occupied after the conclusion of the Labor Day weekend shall require payment of the then current initiation fee to become an Association member.

Can I keep the lake rights if I sell the house?

No. Lake rights are not transferable. They stay with the property.

My house doesn't have lake rights. Can I buy them?

If your house is located in Randolph Township and within the Precise Area available for lake rights, you are eligible to purchase lake rights.

How much does it cost to buy lake rights? And are there other requirements?

The fee to purchase lake rights is 20 times the then current full membership dues plus an initiation fee.

The property owner must execute a deed with a license to use Shongum Lake and its facilities which requires that the property owner pay full membership dues and in the event that the property owner fails to do so, the outstanding dues shall constitute a lien on the property.

What if I live within a mile of Shongum Lake in neighboring Denville? Can I buy lake rights?

No. Only Randolph Township residents can purchase lake rights.

Our Events

St. Patrick's Day Party

Members gather at the clubhouse in March for a winter get together. There's even a bagpipe player. Adults only. Free.

The Hunt

Progressive Dinner

Join us in April for the kickoff event of the season. Over 100 people attend kicking off with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Then we break down into groups of 10 for salad. One and a half hours later and we're with another 10 people for dinner. After dinner, we all meet up for dessert at the Clubhouse or a member's home. Participation Fee applies.

Memorial Day Picnic/Fun Run

Kickoff the summer with a party at the beach from 1:00 - 4:00pm. Games, a D.J., food and drinks are all available. Entree items (i.e. hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc.) are $1.00 each. Everything else is provided for you at no cost.

Friday Night Happy Hours

Start each summer weekend off right. Members gather at the beach at 5:00pm and hang out for the evening. Dinner is often provided at a cost and there is a $2.00 donation per person for this event each week.

4th of July Bike Parade and Picnic

The bike parade begins at 10:00am on the corner of Rock Ledge and Meadowbrook Road and ends at the beach. Enjoy the 4th at beach from 1:00-4:00pm. Games, a D.J., food and drinks are all available. Entree items (i.e. hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc.) are $1.00 each. Everything else is provided for you at no cost.

Family Campout

Pitch a tent starting at 6:00pm and enjoy a night of camping down at the beach. Movies and popcorn begin after dark. A light breakfast is served in the morning. Free.

Labor Day Picnic and Bonfire

End the summer at the beach from 1:00-4:00pm. Games, a D.J., food and drinks are all available. Entree items (i.e. hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc.) are $1.00 each. Everything else is provided for you at no cost. The Bonfire begins at 8:00pm. Enjoy s'mores and a live band, and spend the last few moments of summer with your friends and neighbors by the lake. Free.

The Empty Nesters' Club

The Empty Nesters' Club connects Shongum Lake members to the beach after their children have grown up and moved out of the house. Activities include pot luck dinners at the clubhouse, a weekly bridge group, a knitting group, a French group and a few other small group activities that have periodically been started. We continue to look for more special interest groups. Volunteers run different events.
