Beach Rules
- Obey all instructions of the Lifeguard.
- Anyone swimming or boating outside of beach hours does so at their own risk.
- Anyone swimming or boating outside of the designated swim area does so at their own risk.
- All children under 18 will be required to demonstrate their swimming proficiency to the Lifeguard upon request. Those designated by him as “non swimmers” will be restricted to designated safe areas.
- No unattended children under 12 years of age are permitted on the beach. In cases where no adult accompanies the child, the Lifeguard will be the sole judge as to whether the child is properly attended.
- Smoking is prohibited on the sand area of the beach.
- Grilling is only permitted in charcoal grills located in the picnic areas.
- No horseplay in the water, on beach or dock
- No fishing in the swimming area or swim lanes.
- No boating in the swimming area or swim lanes.
- No animals on the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
- No littering and clean up before leaving.
- No vehicles in the beach area without permission from the SLPOA Council.
- No glass containers on the beach.
- No loud music (unless a SLPOA sponsored event)
- No fires (unless a SLPOA sponsored event)
Beach Badges
- Full and Limited member families shall be given one badge for each permanent resident of their household.
- Badges must be presented for admission during regular beach hours
- Badges should be worn while engaging in any activity in or on any part of Shongum Lake, at any time during the year.
- No member may give or sell his membership badges to anyone
Beach Guests
- Beach usage is limited to SLPOA Full & Limited members and their guests. The member is responsible for their guest’s conduct while using Shongum Lake. Any guest of Shongum Lake must be accompanied by a badge holding member of the Association.
- Guests must obey all standard beach rules including the swimming proficiency test required prior to swimming to the far dock and the rule prohibiting glass of any type on or around the beach area.
- Guests are permitted during the annual beach parties (Memorial, Independence and Labor Days). No advanced registration is required. Adult guests will be charged a $10 fee (kids are free).
- Guests are permitted during the Friday night happy hours in accordance with the SLPOA Happy Hour Guest Registration process as follows: o REGISTRATION - Please complete the form below in order to register guests for happy hour. Registrations can be done in advance as well as up to and throughout happy hour. Only SLPOA full/limited members in good standing can attend and invite guests to happy hours. Each member family is limited to invite one family as guests.
- ENTRANCE FEE - The fee for registered guests is $10 per adult (kids are free) If guests show up and there is no registration there will be a $20 charge per adult. No exceptions. The entrance fee does not cover food or drinks which must be paid for separately.
- PAYMENT - Venmo is preferred, cash is accepted too. Venmo @ShongumLake If you are paying for your guest you must pay at check-in so that your payment can be noted. Guests paying via Venmo must do so at check-in.
Boating
- Boats are defined as non-powered row boats, canoes, sail boats and paddle boards
- Power craft is not permitted on Shongum Lake with the exception of battery-operated trolling motors less than 2 horsepower
- Remote controlled boats in excess of 2 horsepower are not permitted
- Boats at/on the lake must be stored in the designated areas.
- Lake and Canal front property owners may dock/store their boats on their property
- SLPOA does not accept any responsibility for lost or stolen boats, canoes, sail boats or paddle boards
- All boat owners using the lake must register with the Association and obtain boat tags which must be prominently displayed on each boat.
- Abandoned boats will be disposed of in accordance with NJ statute.
Docks and Floats
- SLPOA Approval Required - No structure whatsoever, including but not limited to docks, platforms, and lake walls, may be placed on a strip of land delineating the high-water mark or on the waters of Shongum Lake without SLPOA’s written approval.
- SLPOA reserves the right to rescind its approval and require the removal of any such structure at the owner’s expense, should the owner fail to remain a member in good standing.

Firearms
- Firearms are strictly prohibited on SLPOA property at all times.
- Discharge of any firearms in or about the Lake or adjoining property under the jurisdiction of the Association is strictly forbidden.
Environmental Conditions
- SLPOA is dedicated to maintaining the highest water quality for our lake and watershed area. Any willful or negligent act or omission which causes, or has the potential to cause, environmental harm to the lands or waters of the community will result in the imposition of significant fines and penalties well at the sole discretion of the Council.
Ice Activities
- Any activities on the ice at Shongum Lake are at your own risk
- Ice fishing is permitted
- Skating and ice hockey are permitted
- Power craft of any sort shall not be permitted on the ice except for snow removal purposes
Member Disorderly Conduct
- No member, or member of the immediate family of a member, or their guests or invitees, shall conduct themselves in such a manner as to disrupt the permitted activities of any member, group of members or any organization authorized by SLPOA to conduct such activities on SLPOA property. Any person in violation of this rule will be subject to removal from the premises.
Member Disciplinary Action
- The Executive Council shall take disciplinary action against any Association member who flagrantly, and persistently, disregards or breaks the Association’s rules and regulations and/or damages, destroys or is convicted of stealing Association property or equipment or any other member’s property or equipment while the property or equipment is in an Association area.
- Members may be fined, or their privileges suspended for violations of the By-Laws, or these Rules and Regulations. Members are financially responsible for any fines incurred by themselves, members of their household, their guests, renters, contractors, and other invitees, arising a violation of the By-Laws or these Rules and Regulations. Members may also be held financially responsible for correcting any damage to SLPOA property caused by themselves, members of their household, their guests, renters, contractors, and other invitees.
- The maximum action which the Executive Council may take is limited to a twelve-month suspension of the individual offender from the Association’s activities.
- Five of the seven Executive Council members must vote in the affirmative on any action taken.
- Any infraction which the Executive Council feels requires a more serious punishment shall be brought before the general membership for their action.
Swim Team
- Eligibility requirements. All swimmers:
- Must be between the ages of 5 through 18 and pass a swimming evaluation
- Must be FULL members in good standing
- Must be permanent residents of the membership household. Two exceptions are made to this requirement for the following reasons
- Coaches and immediate families of coaches (children or siblings), if not SLPOA members, are permitted to practice and compete in meets. This exception is only for the season(s) during which they are an active SLPOA swim team coach.
- Full time summer only residents, specifically exchange students living with a host family or children from out of state living with a host family (friends/relatives) who make the membership household their permanent residence for the summer.
- Must be compliant to all North Jersey Regional Lake League (NJRLL) By-Laws
